Prolog

Looking at the works of the painter Sama one tends to think that the apparent disorder of his pictures is wanted or organized. However, it is the disorder of the society in which the artist lives.

The pictures of Sama transpose the spectator to quarters in Ougadougou with their dusty laterite roads or to the walls which seperate the individual properties from each other.

Sama explores the surface of the earth and he gathers everything he finds. This includes shreds of plants, pieces of plastic packing material, remnants of fabric ...... He integrates all these various items in his works of art . In this way his pictures attract the onlooker like a magnet attracts steel and they invite for a walk through his world.

However, Sama does not only rely on the various pieces of his collections for his pictures, he also draws his motives from the house and wall paintings of the Kasèna (figures or geometrical forms) and at times takes protest slogans which yougsters from the suburbs have written in their own language on houses and walls.

The paintings of Sama are rooted deeply in the daily life in Ouagadougou and the symbols of apparent disorder give his pictures their specific something.
